Understanding Leg Veins
Leg veins, including varicose veins and spider veins, are not only unsightly but also a significant medical issue, particularly in Queensland’s long, hot summers. These veins can cause discomfort, making individuals hesitant to wear shorts or skirts, and often worsen with age. Symptoms such as aching, swelling, circulation problems, and even ulcers can develop if left untreated. Early intervention is crucial to prevent progression and avoid more expensive or invasive treatments later on.
At Envisage Clinic in Benowa, QLD, we specialize in non-surgical vein treatments under the expert care of Dr. Christopher Leat, who has performed sclerotherapy and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGS) on hundreds of patients. We offer free or bulk-billed consultations and onsite ultrasound to assess your condition and recommend the most suitable treatment. Regain your confidence and comfort with our tailored vein removal solutions.

What Causes Leg Veins and Related Issues?
Varicose and spider veins result from weakened or damaged vein walls and valves, leading to poor blood flow and visible bulging or web-like patterns. Common contributing factors include:
- Age: Veins naturally lose elasticity over time, increasing the risk of enlargement.
- Genetics: A family history of vein issues significantly raises susceptibility.
- Prolonged Standing or Sitting: Occupations or lifestyles involving long periods of immobility can impair circulation.
- Pregnancy: Hormonal changes and increased blood volume can strain veins.
- Obesity: Excess weight puts additional pressure on leg veins, worsening symptoms.
- Hormonal Influences: Birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy may contribute to vein issues.
At Envisage Clinic, we assess these factors during your consultation to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses both the aesthetic and medical aspects of your vein condition.
What to Expect from Vein Treatments?
Vein treatments at Envisage Clinic, particularly sclerotherapy, are designed to be effective, safe, and minimally invasive. Most sessions take 30 to 45 minutes, and patients can resume normal activities immediately afterward, with no time off work required. Discomfort is generally bearable, and the introduction of Penthrox inhaled anaesthesia ensures a virtually pain-free experience for all. Post-treatment, support stockings are typically worn for 2 weeks to aid healing.
Results are often very good, though perfection can be challenging to achieve due to the tendency of leg veins to recur over time. Most patients require 2 to 6 sessions for optimal outcomes, and periodic maintenance treatments every few years may be necessary. Our team, led by Dr. Christopher Leat, provides thorough follow-up care to ensure lasting results and address any recurrence.
Our Vein Treatment Options
We offer a range of advanced, non-surgical treatments to address varicose veins, spider veins, and other vascular concerns across the body:
Sclerotherapy:
The gold standard for treating surface veins, sclerotherapy involves small injections of a solution that causes veins to collapse and fade. It’s ideal for spider veins and larger blue “feeding” veins, with modern techniques ensuring safety, effectiveness, and comfort. Sessions last 30 to 45 minutes, requiring 2 to 6 treatments for best results.
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS):
Used for larger varicose veins, UGS involves injecting a sclerosing agent under ultrasound visualization for precision. While not as effective as Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), it’s a more affordable option with excellent outcomes for many patients.
Broad Band Light (BBL) for Surface Veins:
While less effective than sclerotherapy for most leg veins, BBL is offered at Envisage Clinic for specific cases where clinically indicated. It’s also used for facial blood vessels and veins on other body areas like the chest or arms.
Facial and Body Vein Treatments:
Facial vessels are typically treated with BBL, while larger or resistant veins can be addressed with radiofrequency needling or sclerotherapy. Body veins on areas like the chest, abdomen, hands, and arms can also be treated with sclerotherapy or BBL.
Note on Other Methods:
Surgical Stripping: Once the only option for larger varicose veins, it’s now rarely performed due to scarring, nerve damage risks, anaesthesia complications, and a high recurrence rate (30–50% within 3 to 5 years).
Laser Treatment (EVLT): Highly effective for larger varicose veins with over a 90% success rate, costing $3,000 to 4,000. It’s not currently offered at Envisage Clinic.
Laser and BBL Limitations for Leg Veins: These are generally less effective and more painful than sclerotherapy, with risks of burning or scarring. They’re often offered only by clinics without trained doctors for sclerotherapy.
Our specialists will recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your vein type, size, and location, ensuring optimal aesthetic and medical outcomes.
